During the 1800’s, the fight for a shorter working day was a constant struggle. In 1886 in Chicago, police tried to disperse a large crowd of striking workers, protesting for a legal eight-hour working day. A bomb was thrown at the police, by an unidentified person, which then lead to the policemen opening fire on the unarmed crowd of strikers. By the year 1891, after several annual demonstrations on the 1st of May around the globe, Workers Day was then finally instated.
Workers day has since been used as a platform to promote fair labour practices on a global scale. Also known as May Day, the 1st of May is celebrated as a public holiday in various countries around the world.
